Screen Printing vs. DTF vs. Embroidery: Which is Best for Your Project?

Screen Printing vs. DTF vs. Embroidery: Which is Best for Your Project?

When it comes to custom apparel in Winnipeg, you’ve got options. The big three are screen printing, DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing, and embroidery. Each one has its strengths, weaknesses, and best use cases. Choosing the right method is the difference between a product that people wear proudly and one that ends up buried in a drawer.

At Rogue Lab, we run all three methods in-house, so we know exactly when each one shines and when it doesn’t. Let’s break them down.

Screen Printing

Best for: Large orders, bold designs, special effects, long-lasting prints

Screen printing is the classic. Ink is pushed directly through a mesh screen onto the garment, creating vibrant colours and a soft hand feel. It’s ideal for designs with solid colours, bold graphics, and high-volume runs.

Pros:

  • Cost-effective for large orders

  • Incredibly durable prints

  • Bright, saturated colours with Pantone matching

  • Works on a wide range of garments

Cons:

  • Not great for small, highly detailed designs with lots of colours

  • Higher setup costs for small runs

When to choose screen printing: If you’re ordering 50 or more shirts for a business, event, or team and want a bold, vibrant print that will survive years of wear and washing.

DTF Printing

Best for: Detailed, full-colour designs, small to medium orders, specialty applications

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a newer technology that’s quickly becoming a favourite in the custom printing world, and for good reason. Your design is printed onto a film using high-resolution inks, then heat-pressed onto the garment. This process allows for incredible detail, unlimited colours, and a smooth, retail-quality finish.

Pros:

  • Perfect for intricate designs, small text, or photo-quality prints

  • No colour limits

  • Works on almost any fabric type and colour

  • Great for small runs without big setup costs

Cons:

  • Slightly different feel compared to screen printing

  • Not as cost-effective for huge runs compared to traditional screen printing

When to choose DTF: If you have a complex, multi-colour design or want something applied in a unique location (like custom neck labels), DTF is the superior choice.

Embroidery

Best for: Premium, high-end branding, hats, outerwear, and uniforms

Embroidery uses thread to stitch your design directly into the fabric. It’s durable, textured, and has a high-end look that’s perfect for professional branding.

Pros:

  • Extremely durable

  • Premium, textured finish

  • Ideal for hats, jackets, polos, and heavy garments

  • Looks great for logos and simple designs

Cons:

  • Not suited for highly detailed or complex designs

  • Can be more expensive, especially for large designs

When to choose embroidery: If you want a polished, professional look for corporate apparel, uniforms, or structured items like hats and jackets.

How to Choose the Right Method

  • Need bold colours in bulk? Go with screen printing.

  • Want full-colour detail, small runs, or unique placements? DTF is your best bet.

  • Looking for a high-end, textured finish? Choose embroidery.

At Rogue Lab, we’ll match your project with the method that delivers the best results, both in looks and in durability.
